Walks from Wairau Pass Homestay / B&B

In addition to the activities noted on the Facilities page, there are a number of walks and longer hiking tracks in the area. Listed below are examples with the "degree of difficulty" defined - that is EASY, MEDIUM, or EXPERIENCED and whether mountain bikes / 4WD are possible.

Nearby Mt Richmond Forest Park provides two excellent walks: Beeby's Knob (terrific views to the east and west); and Red Hills. Both 4WD tracks initially cross private land - if you intend to drive up, permission should be sought (details available). Both these walks are of medium difficulty. Various walks are also accessed from Rainbow Valley Eglees Creek.

NELSON LAKES NATIONAL PARK (All EASY):

Anglers Walk: Time: 1 hr. This walk begins by the Buller River Bridge on the Mt Robert Rad. There are several good spots for trout fishing on the northern bank.

Bellbird Walk: Time: 15 min. This short, wheelchair-standard walk gives an introduction to the Rotoiti Nature Recovery Area. Hear korimako/bellbirds and tui on this loop walk, which starts on the east side of Kerr Bay.

Black Hill Walk: Time: 1 hr 30 min return. This walk climbs from Rotoiti Lodge through beech and manuka to a viewpoint at Black Hill – a solid mound of volcanic rock. After descending, it follows the highway back to the lodge.

Black Valley Walk: Time: 30 min one way. This walk starts at Kerr Bay and follows the Black Valley Stream through majestic beech forest.

Brunner Peninsula Nature Walk: Time: 1 hr 30 min return. See a variety of native plants on this loop walk from Kerr Bay around the peninsula to West Bay and back. The walk crosses the Alpine Fault twice.

Honeydew Walk: Time: 45 min. This walk takes you from the Bellbird Walk further into the Rotoiti Nature Recovery Area.

Loop Track: Time: 1 hr 30 min return. This walk veers off the Bellbird Walk, a Lake Rotoiti short walk, and takes you well into the Rotoiti Nature Recovery Project area.

Moraine Walk: Time: 1 hr 30 min return. This walk winds around the base of Black Hill through manuka and kanuka, passing ‘kettle ponds’ created by glaciers. It starts near Rotoiti Lodge.

ROTOITI TRAMPING TRACKS:
(MEDIUM - EXPERIENCED - Listed in increasing difficulty)

Whisky Falls: Time: 5 hr return. Follow the Lakeside Track from Mt Robert Road to Whisky Falls, named after an illegal whisky still found there in the 1880s. The falls are 40 m high.

Lake Rotoiti Circuit: Time: 7–10 hr. This track through dense forest encircles Lake Rotoiti. In summer, red rata flowers contrast brilliantly with the green bush. Halve the journey by taking a water taxi to or from one of the huts at the lake head.

Speargrass Creek: Time: 6 hr return with lunch at Seagrass Hut. From Upper Mt Robert Carpark the track descends to Speargrass Creek leading onto Speargrass Hut (a side track leads up the Mt Robert ridge onto Angelus).

Mount Robert Circuit: Time: 5 hr return. This loop track, starting from the lower Mt Robert carpark, climbs up Paddys Track on the northern face of Mt Robert to Bushline Hut. Pinchgut Track returns to the Upper Mt. Robert carpark. Early grazing and burning by settlers have badly eroded the mountain, but some beech forest remains high up. Red tussock grass flourishes on the ridge top.

St Arnaud Range Track/Parachute Rock: Time: 5 hr return. This track climbs from Kerr Bay through beech forest to a height of 1650 m. Above the bush line, enjoy spectacular views of the lake and the Buller River and, in late spring and early summer, a colourful display of alpine flowers.

Lake Angelus & Robert Ridge: Lake Angelus, at 1610 metres, is perched high on the ranges between Lakes Rotoiti and Rotorua in Nelson Lakes National Park.
Category: Route
Completion Time: 2 - 3 days (5 - 9 hr each day with 3 route options)

Travers-Sabine Circuit: The Travers-Sabine Circuit is a medium to hard tramp traversing 80km of river valleys and an alpine pass in Nelson Lakes National Park.
Category: Tramping Track
Distance: 80km
Completion Time: 4-7 days loop
